In 2020, 40 percent of consumers in the United States owned a single-cup coffee brewing system. Coffee machines such as these prepare just enough coffee for a single portion during the brewing process and have become quite popular in recent years.
Coffee capsules
There are various ways in which single-cup coffee can be served, a prime example of which is the coffee capsule system. In 2020, around a quarter of past-day coffee drinkers in the United States used coffee capsules. This particular method has become more prevalent in past years.
Thoughts on single-cup systems
In 2019, not all U.S. consumers were keen on the idea of owning a single-cup coffee brewing system: almost a third of survey respondents in the United States stated they would definitely not buy such a coffee machine for their home. Some 13 percent of surveyed Americans said they definitely would buy one. The favorite coffee preparation method that year remained the drip coffee maker: almost half of American past-day coffee drinkers used this method.

The NCDT, beginning in 2012, includes a representative sample of Hispanic-Americans and African-Americans. Comparisons to years prior to 2012 must be made with caution, since the panel enhancement may impair direct tracking.
